Pozn.: Martin Jarvis’s voice always brings to mind his readings of Richmal Crompton’s Just William, which befits his latest venture, Skios by Michael Frayn. One of the characters, the floppy haired Oliver Fox, is like a grown-up William Brown: a scallywag fond of japes to enliven “the dullness of things”.
After arriving at a Greek island resort, he picks up the wrong suitcase from the airport carousel, then merrily steals the identity of its owner, a pompous professor, booked to give a lecture at a spa for millionaires.
The ensuing farce is very funny, if full of head-spinning confusions. Jarvis, a master of comic nuance with an omniscient air, romps through it, exposing on the way all manner of modern follies, including the circus of the lecture circuit of which Frayn must have first-hand experience.
