Pozn. 2: Summer of the Aliens is a semi-autobiographical, 1990s play written by Louis Nowra. The play is an often humorous, unsentimental coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old boy, Lewis, who is obsessed with flying saucers, UFO abductions and imagines aliens are invading the earth.
The year is 1962 and the world is worrying about the Cuban missile crisis. Meanwhile Lewis, a youth on the cusp of manhood living in a Melbourne housing commission, is preoccupied with flying saucers. This is a vivid, amusing and evocative play.
In a fragmentary and kaleidoscopic way, Louis Nowra tells the story of Lewis and his boyhood in a poor Melbourne suburb in the Summer of 1962 at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The adult world as seen by the young Lewis seems to be genuinely crazy, fractured, often menacing, and going increasingly out of kilter. Lewis‘ only explanation is that it’s all caused by UFOs and aliens.
It was first written as a radio play and won the 1990 Prix Italia for Fiction (as an ABC radio play). It was first broadcast on 30 October 1989. Louis Nowra adapted it for the stage. The version published by Currency Press is for the theatre. (Zdroj: Wikipedia)
